security en compliance voor MSPs

Why is your security approach as an MSP running aground?

Security and compliance for MSPs runs aground because generalist engineers roll out specialist tooling without the deep knowledge behind it. Under 30 people a real SOC or MDR expert is not sustainable, and that comes back to bite you as soon as a client really gets hit.

What does work in security and compliance for MSPs?

What works is an honest split between what you do yourself and what you place with a specialist, plus selling security as a base layer instead of as a premium upgrade. MFA, conditional access and backup tests do not belong in the gold package. The MSPs that push this through lose a few price-sensitive clients in the short term and win the conversations at board level.

Why does generalist knowledge behind XDR fail?

An MDR or XDR platform is no substitute for someone who can read a log at three in the morning and separate noise from escalation. Without that knowledge you push configurations into the environment faster than you can understand them.

What is missing after a hack?

Most MSPs can detect and block, but have no forensic team to deal with a ransomware group or reconstruct exfiltration. Arrange a fixed incident partner before you need one, not on the Saturday evening itself.

Why does policy on paper not work?

An information security policy reviewed once a year changes no behaviour. What does work is a PDCA rhythm each quarter, a phishing simulation every month and short team conversations after an incident at a company in the same sector.

Security is not a premium. That is not where you economise.

Frequently asked questions

Can an MSP under 30 people build its own SOC?

In practice hardly ever. Real SOC and MDR specialists want to work among their equals and that pool is small. Anyone who tries anyway pays three times: for people who do not stay, for tooling that is not fully used, and for clients who get hit anyway. Buying in a fixed specialist partner is more realistic for most MSPs under 30 people than building it themselves.

Why is selling MFA as an upsell a problem?

As soon as MFA, conditional access or a backup test sits in a more expensive package, you are selling insecurity as the default. If it goes wrong that is a position you cannot defend to a director, an insurer or the press. MSPs that position security as a base layer lose a few price-sensitive clients in the short term, but win the conversations with parties who understand what continuity is worth.

What role does AI play in security for MSPs?

AI works on both sides. Attackers test vulnerabilities at scale, so tenant hardening has to be in order. On the defending side you can read out the threat exposure of a tenant within minutes with AI, mapped onto frameworks such as CIS. Anyone not deploying AI defensively loses on speed to whoever does. On top of that, client staff are already using AI anyway, so internal policy is no longer optional.

What is the biggest internal obstacle in this shift?

Not the technology, but the people. Engineers used to solving everything themselves have to accept that there are things they do not do. Account managers who sold security as a margin product have to position it as hygiene and find margin elsewhere. And the owner has to dare to tell a client: we do not do this ourselves, and we are transparent about that.
