klantbegrip in MSP verkoop

Do you fix the issue or understand the client?

In MSP sales, understanding the client is the difference between putting out a fire and surfacing the real question. Anyone who only closes tickets misses the conversation where trust and margin sit.

Why does client understanding get buried in MSP sales?

MSP teams are trained for speed: incident in, incident resolved. That comes at the cost of the people skills that let a client say what is actually going on. Productivity wipes out depth, and when it comes to leading on expected behaviour, MSP owners fall back on general terms instead of concrete agreements. The result: reaching each other is easy, but are you getting through?

Are you solving the problem, or are you understanding the client?

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between solving a problem and understanding a client?

Solving a problem is reactive: there is a fault and it gets fixed. Understanding a client means looking at what sits underneath the incident: a growth plan, frustration with earlier suppliers, or pressure from one of their own customers. Fix only, and you stay a supplier. Understand, and you move into the position of a sparring partner you can steer on commercially.

Why do MSPs train too little on conversation technique?

Technical certifications are measurable, required by vendors and directly billable. Conversation training is none of those things, so it drops out of the budget. Yet an MSP margin breaks more often on a badly handled client conversation than on a missing technical skill. It is a blind spot in most MSP staffing plans.

How do you spot in a conversation that something other than the stated question is at play?

The signals: the client keeps circling back to the same subject even though the fix addresses it, the tone does not match the content, or you get asked about something outside your scope. Those are the moments to stop solving and start asking what is really going on.

Why do leaders turn vague as soon as behaviour comes up?

On technology there is a shared language: a backup either works or it does not. On behaviour, most MSPs have no such language. So leaders fall back on general terms like proactive or ownership, without naming what that looks like in a client call on a Monday morning. The concrete examples are missing.

TV Gelderland 2021
