AI adoptie MSP

Is your MSP ready for AI without a data foundation?

An MSP is only ready for AI once data is ordered, classified and accessible on a role basis. Without that foundation, every AI project at a client produces more risk than margin. The revenue model also shifts from per PC to per user with several devices.

Why does AI adoption at MSPs get stuck on data hygiene?

For AI services to work at a client, three things have to be in order: data classification, role-based access, and a revenue model that fits users with several devices instead of separate PCs. If one of those layers is missing, AI either leaks data uncontrolled or produces output nobody dares to steer on. The MSPs not investing in this now will lose the lead to parties that do take education seriously.

Why data classification first?

AI running on unclassified data shares confidential documents with the wrong user. Classification and role-based access are the precondition, not an optional appendix to the AI project.

From per PC to per user?

The MSP used to bill per PC, now per PC and per user, with several devices per user. That model changes again as soon as AI agents and tokens become the unit of value.

Who arranges the education?

Knowledge now comes from personal initiative and peer exchange between MSP owners and younger colleagues. As long as schools lag behind, education stays the responsibility of the MSP itself, if leaders want to remain leaders.

If we want to be the leaders, we have to make a serious effort to get that education in order.

Frequently asked questions

What does an MSP have to arrange before AI services can be delivered to clients?

The basis is data hygiene at the client: data has to be ordered, classified by sensitivity and given role-based access. Only then does an AI tool have enough context to be useful without leaking confidential information. Which AI solution is chosen is secondary to that, because without that foundation every model produces unreliable or unsafe output.

How does the MSP revenue model change with AI and several devices per user?

The classic model billed per PC. It then shifted to billing per PC and per user, because one user has several devices. With AI agents and tokens there will probably be another adjustment, in which consumption and output units count. MSPs that do not move their contracts and licence structure with it leave margin on the table or subsidise their clients AI use out of their own pocket.

Why is education a bottleneck for AI growth in the MSP sector?

AI knowledge inside MSPs is now mainly built through personal initiative, mutual exchange and younger colleagues trying things out. Formal education lags behind practice. That means MSP leaders who want to stay out in front have to invest in structured education for their teams themselves, instead of waiting for schools and courses to catch up.

What happens if MSPs step into AI too late?

Speed decides who stays a leader. MSPs that do not tackle the data foundation, the revenue model and education in parallel lose ground to parties that do. Clients then choose MSPs that can deliver AI responsibly, including access control and clear pricing. Stepping in late means not only less margin, but also a loss of strategic position in the conversation with the client.
